Linocut Print Making

Bringing Colour to Linocut: A Step by Step guide to the Jig Saw Method
There are many ways of introducing colour to a print, but today, let’s look into the Jig Saw method. It’s simple, fun and requires just one piece of lino.
Linocut printing often begins in black and white, but the introduction of colour can take a print to a whole new level.
What is the Jig Saw Method?
The Jig Saw method involves carefully cutting your linoleum block into several pieces, one for each desired colour. The inked pieces are reassembled ready for hand burnishing or placing onto the press bed to be printed in a single pass.
Materials Required
- Lino Block
- Water or oil based inks
- Craft Knife or fine saw
- Rollers (brayers)
- Printing press or baron or simple wooden spoon
- Printmaking Paper
Step by Step Instructions
Step One:
Sketch your design onto the lino block. think about how many colours you want to use and divide your image into colour zones. Keep your design bold and simple, especially for your first attempt.

Step Two:
Using a sharp craft knife or fine saw, carefully cut the lino block into puzzle like pieces along your colour boundaries. This block has been cut into two pieces; one for the pot of snowdrops with the background having been carved away, and the surface or shelf for the pot to sit upon.

Step Three:
Roll out your chosen inks and apply carefully to each piece accordingly. Then piece together being vigilant not to touch the inky surfaces.

Step Four:
Place your paper onto the inked pieces and burnish. Or place onto a press bed and pass through the press. This example has been cut along the angled line and around the top of the coffee cup into two pieces.

I hope you have a go at lino cut printing using the jig saw method. You can cut your block into as many pieces as you please to produce a beautifully multicoloured print.
